Even though the White man tried it was something that the Aboriginal people kept as their own. This, I see as an advantage to the Aboriginal culture because the medicinal practices were based upon these beliefs, and they could n ot be stolen from them. One other advantage to the healing practices of the Aboriginal people was the formation of bonds and ties with one another through the ceremonies and rituals that were performed.(p73). An illness was a communities responsibility. Everyone had roles from dancing to singing to drumming, depending on the ceremony.(p75). The family would constantly surround the ill stay in the same room until the person was no longer sick.-This was misunderstood by many western medical doctors who eventually forbid any of the rituals to take place.(p115). So the main advantage I would say, that Aboriginal healing practices has for the Aboriginal people is the understanding and clarity it makes for them because it is what they know and what their ancestors knew. Reasons that I will discuss for the persistence of Aboriginal healing practices are 1. Lack of doctors for the reserve. 2. The Aboriginal people were afraid and unaware of the practices (not trusting of the ways). 3. The communication barrier between doctors and their patients. 4. The misunderstanding of cultural practices and the roles of the individuals involved (the role of a doctor vs. role of a healer). 5. Many of their healing methods still continued to be effective western medical attention was the last resort. There was a shortage of doctors on the reserves if there were any doctors at all; as well as a shortage of doctors who would treat the aboriginal people. The native people were often affiliated with very malignant diseases such as smallpox, scurvy, and other loathsome diseases..doctors wanted to protect their own health and safetythey feared potential outbreak within the communitiesthis being the number one reason why the department was at first unwilling to entertain the notion of medical practitioners for the reserves.(p143). The white culture should feel extreme guilt for it was them who introduced the malignant diseases to the Aboriginal people, forced them to practice their Western medicines, than left them to suffer when no western medicines were provided resulting in the high death rates of the Aboriginal people. And this all because the doctors were afraid to do their jobs-treat the ill. Frankly this makes me sick. In another section of the book it states that the people(Aboriginals) refused to come to the hospitals to be treated becau se there was not enough staff to support all the people in need.(p117). So obviously Aboriginal health was not in the best intrests of the White man , especially when it came to supplying proper care. Aboriginal people were not familiar with the ways of western medicines which resulted in them acting with fear and distrust towards the system. Doctors medicines were neither understood nor trusted by the Aboriginal people.(p144). The focus of Aboriginal healing methods were not the same as the White mansmany times the doctors would focus on the next life while the healers would focus on this life.(p74). White healing methods were not based on spiritual beliefs rather only on the scientific and physical facts. This produced little faith in the new medicines no purpose or beliefs to follow. Joe Magnarelli at Smalls Jazz Club Free Online Research Papers On Thursday, February 13th, I went to a club performance at Smalls Jazz Club on 183 W. 10th Street to hear Joe Magnarelli on trumpet play a set with a pianist, bassist, and percussionist. The set lasted over an hour and was appreciated by a large audience crammed into the tiny basement room. The songs performed were Mr. Mags, Waltz for Aunt Marie, Ruby’s Weekend, You’ve Change, and Home Changed. My overall impression was that the ensemble, particularly Joe Magnarelli, was fantastic but that I had trouble understanding what was going on in the music. The style of the group was more modern than what we have studied in class, so I did not know how to classify it or understand it fully. I did notice, however, that they used a contemporary version of the classic New Orleans style by using structured yet improvised counterpoint that was more dissonant and jagged than that from the early 20th century. In terms of the ensemble, Joe Magnarelli was clearly the leader of the group, as he stood in front of the other three members and always took the first and last solos of each piece. The other three players, however, each had their turn at taking solos, although the pianist clearly had more solos than the bassist and percu ssionist. I assumed that this allotment of solos occurred because the bass and percussion comprised the rhythm section, which by nature does not give many solos, while the piano and trumpet were the melody players. The group, for the most part, alternated between faster, upbeat songs and slower, creamier songs. It was during the upbeat songs that I noticed the use of the New Orleans counterpoint. I immediately, however, took a preference to the slower pieces. I felt that the fast songs were too â€Å"busy† sounding (New Orleans style gone crazy), with each musician’s part sounding so different from the rest that any cohesiveness within the group was hard to depict. I also felt that the balance in the upbeat numbers was a little percussion-heavy, where the clanging of the hihat pierced through the rest of the ensemble, thus distracting the listener from the other parts. Furthermore, it was harder to pick out melodies and themes in the faster songs than it was in the slower songs, so I tended to understand the forms of the slower songs better. I particularly appreciated the second song, â€Å"Waltz for Aunt Marie.† It was a soulful tune that allowed Joe Magnarelli to highlight his smooth, tender tone on the trumpet, which was a beautiful contrast to his brassier tone used in the faster songs. One part of the song that struck me was its tag: Magnarelli took an unaccompanied solo mainly consisting of an ascending scale and then ended with the group on the tonic of the key of the piece. This ending surprised me, for I usually expect a jazz number to end on an unpredictable note- i.e., anything but the tonic. I really appreciated that deviance from standard jazz practice, where a little classical influence was a nice touch to the piece. I spoke to Joe Magnarelli after the set to compliment on his performance, particularly on his beautiful sound in the slower tunes. I then asked him how it felt to create such beautiful moments while his audience chatted away to such an extent that the people could not have possibly appreciated the sophisticated mood of the song. I asked him this because during the beautiful end of â€Å"Waltz for Aunt Marie,† I had trouble focusing on the music because of all the noise around me, thus rendering me quite agitated. I mentioned to him that I am a classical musician, so I expect complete silence when I perform or attend a concert, and I asked him what he thought of the difference in protocol between the two types of music. He responded that he cares only that his audience has a good time, so he does not want to appear too anal about the noise level in the club. I asked if he would ever tell an audience in the middle of set quiet down if the people were too noisy, and he said no, t hat jazz creates a more relaxed atmosphere than classical music and that noise level is something jazz musicians must simply deal with. He was so nice and giving of his time that I was really thrilled to talk to him. He even asked for my name, and when I said Laura, he mentioned the song â€Å"Laura† and said he would play it for me if I ever came to hear him again. I was really touched by his kindness; it made the whole evening worthwhile. It also made me understand the love that exists within jazz, where the musicians play and improvise from their hearts and love the music despite any surrounding circumstances. Sometimes I do not have that same impression about classical music. I cannot help to feel, however, that it is wrong to treat jazz as background music, such as many of the audience members at Smalls did that night. Perhaps people go to Smalls for its atmosphere and not necessarily for the music itself. I am not against the atmosphere that a small, cozy, jazz club creates; however, I feel the music should always come first and that that rule should hold for both classical music and jazz. The concept of a living Essay The concept of a living will is to give you peace of mind about any health problems or issues that may arise in the future. Also, it addresses the choices that need to be made and your family members inability to make those decisions for you, regarding your health. Leaving the decisions up to your family members can be difficult for them. A living will allows you to make those choices ahead of time alleviating the stress for family members. It is important for anyone, over the age of 18, to have a living will. In the event of a terminal illness or having become critically injured, without a living will, no one has the right to make medical decisions that impact your life or determine whether you should live or die. These legal documents have different names but one goal; designating your wishes for healthcare when you are unable to do so. The legal document that is imperative to put your wishes into writing is called a living will.   Unlike a traditional will, a living will is primarily directed to medical personnel regarding the types of medical procedures you wish or do not wish to receive when you are terminally ill or incapacitated. The living will becomes operative when it is provided to your physician or healthcare provider and you are incapable of making healthcare decisions for yourself.   A durable power of attorney or also known as a health care proxy is a signed, dated, and witnessed legal document that authorizes an individual to act as a spokesperson or agent of an individual to handle his/her affairs after he/she becomes incompetent. An advance directive combines a living will and durable power of attorney into one document or two separate documents. As with any document, there is potential for problems. The biggest problem is the misinterpretation of the patient’s wishes by medical personnel.   Not specifically defining the terms â€Å"incurable illness,† or â€Å"seriously incapacitated,† can leave the physician to interpret their own meaning, unless specified. There are certain code status’ that can also be too vague for interpretation. For instance, a chemical code in some hospitals means that you wish to be treated with medications only, while another hospital this code means no other procedures, (CPR or invasive procedures) are to be used. By using very specific terms in your living will can make your wishes known and can avoid potential problems. First and foremost, when executing any or all of these legal documents you must first check your state’s statutes to determine its requirements for these legal documents. Each state’s statutes differ, but provide the legal authority for you to make particular decisions in advance. Once you have done this, it’s time to start making important decisions such as; who will you choose to be your durable power of attorney, or health care proxy? How do I choose someone to make these choices in my best interest?   To make this decision, you may want to ask yourself a few questions to help you determine who could speak for you in a medical crisis: 1. Would this person be able to separate their own feelings from yours? 2. This person is able to handle conflict within your family, and medical personnel. 3. Knows you very well and understands what’s important to you. 4. You trust this person in general and with your life. 5. Meets the legal criteria in your state. (Very important.) After requesting permission of the person whom you have chosen for your durable power of attorney and discussing your concerns, instructions, and wishes with them, refer to your attorney to discuss your state’s policies on living wills and health care proxys.   Make your choices clear and foolproof. Next you will want to read and understand, possibly with your attorney present, the living will, a health care proxy, and the durable power of attorney forms, which is available online or from your attorney. Make sure you fully understand the contents of these forms as well as the choices that are to be made along with them. Consulting your physician about the type of care you wish to have or wish not to have, life prolonging treatments, or pain medications. You may also include organ donation in your will. Once the papers are complete and state statutes are followed, and the legal forms are signed, you will want to give copies to your doctor, healthcare proxy, and your family members. You will also want to keep a copy for yourself and this should be kept in an easily accessible location, or in a wallet type form. Laws governing living wills or advance directives vary state to state. These laws contain specific directions and requirements that must be met in order to be in compliance and assures the validity of the living will. Criticism of the Western Genre in Jim Jarmusch’s Film Deadman Jim Jarmusch’s Deadman is a complex interweaving of the rough and tough world of cowboys mixed with blatant criticism of the Western genre as well as the American lifestyle during those times in history. The separate scenes in the movie seem be collected and stringed together allowing the director to bounce between making fun of the whole Western idea to completely embracing the genre. The movie focused on William Blake (an accountant from Cleveland) and his transformation from being an ordinary man to an outlaw. Most Western movies focus on cowboy outlaws, who live by their own rules and follow their own beliefs on justice, while this film focuses on the transformation rather than the man. Jonny Depp’s character stepped into the role of being an outlaw accidentally. The use of violence is prevalent in the film, which fits the Western genre, yet at the same time, the use of guns and violence is always awkward. It’s as though it’s a foreign concept instead of a display of machismo and pride as in most Westerns. The film also has minimal displays of women and their contribution of adding a dynamic of lust and love in the testosterone driven Western genre. This film does not focus on William Blake having any attachments to family or a fiancà ©. A brief explanation is offered for the lack of femininity in the film, yet it leaves the audience wondering why the director did not deem it necessary to include this attachment in the film. Instead the few times that women are shown in the film, they are there to pleasure the males sexually. In the Western genre, women aren’t regarded as vital elements, yet at the same time their contribution is usually to play damsels in distress and show the humane side of the manly hero. In the Western genre women blatantly display the differences between Eastern and Western cultures. The social commentary in the film is overwhelming, sometimes seeming to drive the slow-paced plot.
